Cold Sassy Tree

Cold Sassy Tree by Olive Ann Burns is a coming of age story for a young boy in rural Georgia. It is more than a coming of age story as it is also a May-December romance story between the boy's grandfather and a much younger, Yankee woman.

I liked the story. It did bog down somewhere in the middle, but it picks up again. The first two-thirds of the book is lighthearted and funny. The last third involves some adult themed situations. It only took me a long time to read because of how busy I have been.

I never considered the scandalous romance of the boy's grandfather to be a central part of the story. Rather, I think the story is more about the boy learning to recognize the adults in his life as people with fears and loves.

I have visited rural areas of the southern US and the characters seemed very real. I will probably read the sequel next. As soon as I find some time.

Book Rating: 4 stars
